Dr. Alexander Cook

Biography

Alexander Cook is a lecturer at the Australian National University, specializing in intellectual and cultural history with a focus on Britain, France, and colonial worlds during the eighteenth century. His research explores the intersections of politics, political thought, empire, and consumption culture. Cook's personal research centers on social history and the ways in which ideas, discourses, texts, and images are utilized by individuals and groups in various social contexts. He holds a BA (Hons) and University Medal from ANU and has completed his M.Phil and PhD at the University of Cambridge. During his career, he has participated in numerous historical projects, including collaborations with the BBC, the National Library of Australia, and the National Museum of Australia. Cook has also served as co-editor of History Australia, a journal of the Australian Historical Association, and has directed undergraduate studies in history at ANU. He is currently the Chief Investigator on an ARC-funded Discovery Project titled 'Revolutionary Voyages', which involves a collaborative exploration of scientific expeditions during the era of the French Revolution.
