Biography

Alexander Geurts received his MD in 1987 and PhD in 1992 in Medical Sciences from Radboud University Nijmegen. He is a registered physiatrist by the European Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and a clinical epidemiologist in the Netherlands. His primary research interest lies in improving balance and gait for motor recovery, focusing particularly on neurorehabilitation, especially following strokes. Geurts conducts translational research to explore determinants and mechanisms of motor control recovery, and he develops diagnostic and prognostic tools to evaluate interventions and rehabilitation strategies for adults and children suffering from cerebral, spinal, and neuromuscular diseases. Since 2005, he has been a full Professor and Chair in the Department of Rehabilitation at the Radboud University Medical Center. He is also the principal investigator at the Donders Centre for Brain, Cognition, and Behaviour and has been vice-president of the Dutch Society for Neurorehabilitation since 2008. Geurts has co-authored over 130 articles registered with PubMed and has been involved in various national research programmes and innovation projects.
