Biography

Alexander J.B. Hampton is an Associate Professor in the Department of Study of Religion at the University of Toronto. He received his PhD in Divinity from the University of Cambridge in 2015. Prior to joining the University of Toronto in 2017, he taught at Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University. He earned a Master of Philosophy in Philosophical Theology from the University of Oxford, a Master of Arts in Religious Studies from Stanford University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Literary Studies and Philosophy from the University of Toronto. His research and teaching focus on the philosophy of religion, particularly the philosophical and aesthetic interactions between spirituality and nature. Hampton's work critically examines the metaphysical changes influencing human interaction with nature and the role of Platonism in shaping Western thought about spirituality. His publications include books such as 'Metaphysics of Divine Participation' (Cambridge, 2025) and numerous articles discussing the aesthetics of religion and the impact of Romanticism on modern religious thought.
