Alex Horner-Devine grew up canoeing rivers and lakes in Ontario, Canada. He began his career as a fluid mechanics and whitewater kayaking instructor on the Ottawa River. He studied fluid mechanics in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering department at Princeton University. Seeking a return closer to his roots, he entered graduate studies in Environmental Fluid Mechanics at Stanford University, where he completed his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. He joined the Civil and Environmental Engineering faculty at the University of Washington in Fall 2004. From 2012 to 2013, he was a visiting scholar at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. His research group focuses on fluid mechanics near the river-ocean interface, utilizing field observations, laboratory experiments, and numerical models to understand mixing and transport processes that determine the fate of sediment, nutrients, and contaminants in rivers, estuaries, and the coastal ocean. Current projects include sediment transport in the Rhine River plume, dynamics of wave-supported gravity currents, intensification impact of wave-breaking on river plumes, river discharge estuary dynamics, and sediment re-suspension in the Duwamish River estuary.
