Dr. Alexander Horsley

Biography

Dr. Horsley is a clinical academic at the University of Manchester and a consultant at the Manchester Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre. He leads a program combining basic science and clinical research as part of the University of Manchester's NIHR Biomedical Research Centre in Respiratory Medicine. His main work focuses on novel technologies with clinical applications, particularly the lung clearance index (LCI), and relates clinical outcomes to imaging across all age groups, from infants to adults. Dr. Horsley is also the medical director of the NIHR Manchester Clinical Research Facility at Wythenshawe Hospital, where he oversees a wide range of clinical trials in cystic fibrosis, serving as principal chief investigator for some phase 1 studies. He has significantly contributed to national policies regarding cystic fibrosis medications and also helped shape international guidelines related to multiple breath washout. Dr. Horsley has extensive experience training and mentoring through various fellowships and academic positions, ultimately achieving recognition as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester and Honorary Consultant at Wythenshawe Hospital, with research interests emphasizing lung physiology and the implications for lung infections and airway disease management.
