Alexander Hunter is an autistic disabled composer of Scottish, German, and Red River Métis heritage. He studied composition, double bass, and ethnomusicology at Northern Illinois University, earning his PhD in composition from Edinburgh Napier University. In 2014, he relocated to Canberra to take up a lecturing position at the Australian National University in the School of Music. Hunter teaches composition and theory and founded the ANU Experimental Music Studio. His work as a composer is based on open works, encouraging a fluid relationship between composer and performer. Hunter has collaborated with several performers and ensembles, including Mabel Kwan, Quiet Music Ensemble, and the Edinburgh Quartet. His current performance-led research is focused on collaborative multimedia works with visual artists and dancers. His research interests include open and non-linear music, graphic notation, and the intersection of feminism and musical composition.
