Biography

Alexander Kirshner is a Professor of Political Science at Duke University, where his research focuses on democratic theory, comparative politics, and the ethical dilemmas posed by antidemocratic opposition to democratic government. He has authored notable works, including 'Theory of Militant Democracy' published by Yale University Press in 2014, and more recently, 'Legitimate Opposition' in 2022. Kirshner's scholarship investigates the value of legitimate opposition and its implications for political systems defined by conflict and democratic integrity. He actively engages in topics surrounding political polarization and democracy's fragilities, contributing to esteemed journals such as the American Political Science Review and Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy.
