Biography

Alexander Lvovsky is an experimental physicist, originally from Moscow. He completed his undergraduate studies in Physics at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. In 1993, he moved to New York City to pursue graduate studies in Physics at Columbia University, where he was supervised by Dr. Sven R. Hartmann and focused his thesis research on coherent optical transients in atomic gases, obtaining his Ph.D. in 1998. Following this, he spent a year as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley, and then moved for five years to Germany as an Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral fellow, where he led a research group in quantum-optical information technology at Universität Konstanz. In 2004, he became a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Calgary and, in autumn 2018, took a professorship at the University of Oxford. Lvovsky's research encompasses a wide range of topics in quantum optical technology. He is the founder of Lumai, a spin-off enterprise that develops ultra-fast, energy-efficient optical neural network technology. Additionally, he initiated COMPOS, a nationwide outreach program providing high-level physics and mathematics tutorials to secondary school students in the UK. His contributions to the field have earned him recognition, including being a past Canada Research Chair and Fellow of both the American Physical Society and Optica. He has received multiple awards, such as the International Quantum Communications award and commendation from the Prime Minister of Canada, as well as the Emmy Noether research award from the German Science Foundation.
