Biography

Alexander Meckelburg is a historical anthropologist with an interdisciplinary background in anthropology, history, and sociology. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of History at University College London and a member of the ERC-funded project African Abolitionism: Rise Transformations Anti-Slavery Africa (AFRAB). His research focuses on the intellectual global history of abolition in Ethiopia, particularly exploring how historical memory of slavery interacts with contemporary political and social issues. Meckelburg is a member of the scientific board of Aethiopica: International Journal of Ethiopian and Eritrean Studies. He has previously served as an editorial assistant for Encyclopaedia Aethiopica and was a research fellow at the Hiob Ludolf Centre for Ethiopian and Eritrean Studies at the University of Hamburg. Meckelburg has conducted extensive fieldwork in Western and Southern Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, and the Kenyan coast, utilizing a multi-faceted approach to explore historical contexts shaping contemporary social dynamics. His research interests encompass transitions in slavery, abolition, emancipation, labor, migration, and the political history of Northeast and Eastern Africa. He is also co-editing a special issue on slavery and the slave trade in Ethiopian Studies for the Supplement Aethiopica Series.
