Biography

The study of politics is about power and principle. Political actors aspire to what is right, while also practicing to pursue their own interests. Alexander Moens has analyzed the foreign policy process of American presidents, including Jimmy Carter, and how governments act in international affairs, learning through interviews with policymakers in national capitals and international organizations such as NATO and the European Union. He has spent months working with Canada’s Global Affairs in Ottawa and at the U.S. National Defense University in Washington, D.C., and the NATO Defense College in Rome, conducting research alongside practitioners. His focus includes the intricate relationships between China, America, and Russia, exploring the vantage points from North America within Europe’s key defense organization, NATO. In 2017, he developed a unique program called the NATO Field School Simulation Program, allowing 45 undergraduate and graduate students from Canadian NATO nations to experience simulations and interact with military and diplomatic officials across various European countries.
