Biography

Alexander Palazzo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Toronto. He earned his PhD in 2003 and conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Palazzo's research focuses on mRNA localization, genetic translation, and the role of ribonucleoprotein complexes in cellular processes. His lab studies how mRNAs are exported from the nucleus and localized to specific sites within the cytoplasm of mammalian cells. His interests include the regulation of gene expression, particularly the mechanisms that dictate the transport and translation of mRNAs in different cellular contexts. He is also exploring the evolutionary forces that shape nucleotide content in human protein-coding genes. Dr. Palazzo has received several awards for his research and teaching, including the Ontario Early Researcher Award and the Canadian Institute of Health Research New Investigator Award. In addition to his research, he is a member of the editorial board for PLoS and holds the Jean D'Alembert Chair at Université Paris-Saclay.
