Biography

Alexander Paredez is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Washington. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, San Diego in 1998, during which he began his research career studying actin binding proteins in C. elegans. He completed an integrated Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in 1999 and then pursued a PhD at Stanford University, focusing on the interaction between plant cortical microtubules and cell wall organization under the mentorship of Chris Somerville and David Ehrhardt, receiving his doctorate in 2006. Following his doctoral studies, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley, investigating the cytoskeleton of the protozoan parasite Giardia intestinalis. His research interests include the genetics and genomics of Giardia lamblia, a significant pathogen affecting a large population worldwide, particularly in impoverished regions. Paredez's work has contributed to the understanding of the actin cytoskeleton, its evolution, and its regulatory mechanisms. His groundbreaking research aims to uncover potential therapeutic targets for giardiasis and to provide insights into the basic cellular mechanisms influenced by G-protein signaling and cytoskeletal dynamics.
