Biography

Dr. Alexander M. Price is an Assistant Professor in the Wistar Institute at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. He received his B.S. in Genetics and Cell Biology from Washington State University in 2009 and earned his Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology from Duke University in 2016. His research focuses on DNA viruses and how these pathogens subvert host cell biology. In particular, his lab is dedicated to studying how viruses utilize the cellular RNA processing machinery to create viral RNA. His work reveals that DNA viruses have evolved strategies for molecular mimicry and have developed mechanisms that diverge from standard cellular activities, affecting innate immune responses and inflammation, with broad implications for the progression of autoimmune diseases and cancers. Key projects in his lab involve investigating how dsRNA is sensed during viral infections and how viral transcription is spatially regulated. He employs high-resolution microscopy and mass spectrometry in his research.
