Biography

Alexander Raaijmakers is an assistant professor with a joint position at Eindhoven University of Technology and the University Medical Center Utrecht. He is a member of the research group Medical Image Analysis within the Department of Biomedical Engineering, focusing on education related to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). At the University Medical Center Utrecht, he is embedded within the 7 Tesla Research group in the Department of Radiology, emphasizing RF engineering for ultrahigh field MRI and body imaging along with RF safety concerning MRI. His remarkable contributions include the introduction of dipole antennas and coil array elements specifically for ultrahigh field imaging. Raaijmakers leads multiple research projects, overseeing five PhD students and one postdoc, in addition to collaborating with two RF engineers, aiming to develop supportive technology and hardware scanning sequences that facilitate clinical adoption of ultrahigh field MRI for body imaging, particularly targeting the heart, prostate, breasts, liver, and kidneys. Furthermore, he has translated lessons learned from ultrahigh field MRI studies to improve coil array designs for lower field strengths, particularly addressing RF safety around medical implants. Raaijmakers obtained his MSc in Applied Physics from the University of Groningen in 2004 before pursuing and completing his PhD at the University Medical Center Utrecht, where he investigated the effects of magnetic fields in radiotherapy. He has garnered extensive experience in electromagnetic physics and MRI RF engineering, and in 2013, he joined UMC Utrecht as an assistant professor, followed by his appointment at Eindhoven University of Technology in 2016.
