Biography

Alexander Remels was born on February 13, 1982, in Herk-De-Stad, Belgium. After finishing high school, he began studying Biomedical Sciences at Hasselt University in Belgium and continued at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, obtaining his Master's degree in 2004. Following his graduation, he commenced his PhD in the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Maastricht University, culminating in 2009 with his thesis entitled 'A molecular basis loss muscle oxidative phenotype: implications COPD', which investigated the mitochondrial energy metabolism abnormalities in skeletal muscle related to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). After completing his PhD, Alexander secured a long-term travel fellowship from the Dutch Lung Foundation and spent a year working in the lab of Dr. D. Guttridge at Ohio State University in the USA. Upon his return to Maastricht University, he garnered several research grants, including a Kootstra Talent Fellowship and a NWO VENI grant from the Dutch Lung Foundation. His research primarily focuses on the impact of inflammatory processes on oxidative-glycolytic energy metabolism in cardiac and skeletal muscle. Currently, he serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Maastricht University, where he is actively involved in teaching and conducting research on mitochondrial energy metabolism across various cell types and tissues, exploring potential pharmacological and nutritional interventions for health and disease.
