Biography

Alexander (Alex) Robinson is an Associate Professor in the Landscape Architecture + Urbanism program at the University of Southern California, where his work focuses on the reinvention of consequential anthropogenic landscapes through the use of multidisciplinary tools and community engagement. His research primarily investigates civic infrastructure and its ecological functions, particularly in the context of the Los Angeles River. Alex has been actively involved in the development of the Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan and continues to lead initiatives that promote nature-based infrastructure, resilience to climate change, and enhanced community engagement in design processes. His lab, the Inclusive Infrastructure Design Lab (IIDL), collaborates with various USC schools and municipal partners to integrate engineering, ecology, and community participation into urban infrastructure projects. Alex’s research findings and methodologies are shared through publications and community initiatives, including his recent book, Spoils Dust: Reinventing Lake Made Los Angeles. He is also known for his dynamic teaching approach, and he leads courses that challenge students to address contemporary landscape architecture issues through innovative design solutions.
