Biography

Alexander Sack is an internationally recognized expert in noninvasive brain stimulation and cognitive neuroscience. He studied Psychology and earned a Master of Science in Psychology and a PhD in Natural Sciences (summa cum laude) from Frankfurt University, Germany. After completing postdoctoral research, he was appointed Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the Faculty of Psychology & Neuroscience at Maastricht University in 2011. Dr. Sack is a member of the Young Academy of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Young Academy Europe. He has pioneered influential research in brain stimulation, developing novel tools to uncover the dynamics of brain functions related to cognition and behavior. His principal investigations focus on the neurobiological and psychological principles underlying attention, learning, memory, and cognitive control, incorporating advanced techniques like fMRI and EEG with brain stimulation. He is the Principal Investigator at the Maastricht Brain Imaging Centre, advancing the understanding of cognitive processes and treatment methodologies for neurological and psychiatric disorders. Dr. Sack has received several prestigious awards and grants throughout his career, including NWO VENI, VIDI, and VICI, alongside an ERC Consolidator grant in 2011. He founded the Dutch-Flemish Brain Stimulation Foundation, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration in brain research and its clinical applications. He is also the Vice Dean for Research at his faculty, where he leads advancements in integrative neuroscience.
