Alexander A. Sawchuk, born in Washington, DC, received his S.B. degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University. He joined the University of Southern California in 1971 as a professor in the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and has served in various leadership roles including the Leonard Silverman Chair and Systems Chair of the department. With over ten years as Director of the Signal Image Processing Institute (SIPI) and Deputy Director of the Integrated Media Systems Center (IMSC), his research focuses on optoelectronic devices, parallel optical computing, and data storage applications. His interests include image processing, immersive media technology, wireless health, computer vision, and machine learning. A holder of numerous U.S. patents and author or co-author of over 175 technical publications, he has supervised the Ph.D. research of more than 40 students. Sawchuk has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching and service in the field, including the USC Associates Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Optica Distinguished Service Award. He is a Fellow of Optica and the SPIE, and a Life Fellow of the IEEE, contributing significantly to the scientific and technical communities through various leadership roles and committee memberships.
