Dr. Smith received his BSc with Honours in molecular genetics and a PhD in physiology, cell, and developmental biology from the University of Alberta. His doctoral research focused on the use of applied genetics to understand and disrupt the reproductive physiology of blood-sucking ticks. Following his PhD, Dr. Smith completed a postdoctoral fellowship under Dr. Tara Klassen at the University of British Columbia, where he worked on the development of new molecular, bioinformatic, and computational tools for the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric epilepsy. He also completed another postdoc with Dr. Abby Collier, working on drug metabolism and hormone recycling in prostate cancer. In his current role as an Assistant Professor, Dr. Smith teaches within the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences program, translating his laboratory experience into courses that equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed in pharmaceutical research, industry, and academia. He maintains an active interest in wet lab and pedagogical research, and currently teaches lectures and labs for PHAR 203, PHAR 304, and PHAR 307.
