Alex is an Associate Professor at the Hamlyn Centre, Institute of Global Health Innovation and the Department of Surgery & Cancer at Imperial College London. His research focuses on the development of novel tools for biomedicine based on optical techniques such as spectroscopy, microscopy, and interferometry. These innovations involve applications in various medical conditions, particularly rectal cancer and malnutrition, with a specific emphasis on developing low-cost diagnostic devices for use in the developing world. Prior to his current role, Alex completed his PhD in the Physics Department at Imperial College, subsequently working as a Postdoctoral Research Associate and Research Fellow in Chemistry, Computing, and Medicine. He has been involved in a diverse array of projects, including the development of novel endoscopic instruments for cancer diagnosis, the investigation of protocells and amyloid materials using fluorescence lifetime imaging, and the use of Raman spectroscopy for early infection diagnostics. In 2018, he was appointed as a lecturer (assistant professor) at the Hamlyn Centre and was invited to become a member of the World Economic Forum’s Young Scientists Community. At the Hamlyn Centre, he leads the Clinical Photonics Lab and collaborates with various local and international researchers across academia and industry.
