Biography

Alexander R. Uhl received his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH), Switzerland. He has a Diploma in Nanoscale Engineering from the University of Würzburg, Germany, and has conducted graduate studies at the University of British Columbia, Canada, and Uppsala University, Sweden. A three-time fellow of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), Dr. Uhl has conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Washington, USA, under Professor Hugh Hillhouse at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). He specializes in materials technologies for solar energy conversion and develops printed solar cells and tandem devices for clean, renewable electricity and storable fuels. His devices currently hold the world record for the highest power conversion efficiency in CuIn(S,Se)2 solar cells using a non-vacuum process. Dr. Uhl has filed patents for solution-processed chalcogenide solar cells, authored a book chapter on perovskite solar cells, and served as a guest editor for the scientific journal Thin Solid Films.
