Dr. Alexander Wandl

Biography

Alexander Wandl is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at Delft University of Technology. He is a member of the Environmental Technology Design section within the Department of Urbanism and participates in the steering group of the Circular Built Environment Hub, a think tank focused on circularity in the built environment. He completed his PhD in Urbanism at TU Delft, concentrating on sustainable spatial development in peri-urban areas. His educational background includes a European Postmaster in Urbanism and a Master’s degree from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, Austria. His research interests lie in urban regional planning, urban design, and environmental sciences, with a strong focus on spatial dynamics related to the transition to a circular society. Wandl applies an extended territorial metabolism approach, integrating urban planning and design tools with landscape architecture and spatial data science. His recent work has emphasized the spatial dimensions of circularity in urban transitions and has been recognized through various EU-funded research initiatives aimed at incorporating circular principles into urban design. He has also engaged in local politics and participatory processes in Vienna, which have shaped his approach to collaborative urban development. Wandl is an editorial board member of the journal Planning Practice & Research and has developed interdisciplinary courses to educate future advocates of the circular economy.
