Biography

Alexander Zholkovsky graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russia in 1959, earning a Ph.D. in linguistics from the Institute of Oriental Languages in 1969. He has an extensive career in academia, being a prominent figure in the fields of Slavic Languages and Literatures. His research interests encompass Russian literary studies, focusing on Soviet Aesopian art, poetics, bad writing, and intertextuality. Zholkovsky examines the grammatical power within Russian literature and has authored multiple publications that reflect on modern Russian writers engaged in a reinterpretive dialogue with the literary masters of previous generations, including Karamzin, Pushkin, Gogol, Tolstoy, and Akhmatova. He has been a Professor Emeritus at USC Dornsife, where he has contributed significantly to the academic community, supervising M.A. and Ph.D. theses and participating in various committees. His notable works include 'Somali Syntax: Deep Surface Structures' and 'Explanatory Combinatorial Dictionary of Modern Russian' co-authored with Igor Mel’cuk, among many others. Zholkovsky has also been actively involved in international literature conferences, presenting lectures on topics related to Russian literary theory and history.
