Biography

Alexandra Braun holds the Lord President Reid Chair of Law at the University of Edinburgh and serves as the Programme Director for the LLM in Comparative Private Law. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Genoa and received a PhD in Comparative Private Law from the University of Trento. Prior to joining the Edinburgh Law School in August 2017, she was a Faculty Member at the University of Oxford, where she held positions as a Fellow Tutor in Law at Lady Margaret Hall and a Junior Research Fellow at St. John’s College, Oxford. Professor Braun's extensive research interests focus on the comparative study of law and legal history, particularly the intersection of law and liminal spaces. Her current research centers on succession law, trusts, and gifts, as well as the circulation of legal ideas among different legal traditions. Her notable publications include a monograph titled 'Claiming Promised Inheritance: Comparative Study', which was published by Oxford University Press in 2022 and was selected as one of the 'Law Books of the Year' by the German law journal JuristenZeitung in 2023. Professor Braun also engages in research on informal succession planning and its implications for intergenerational equality. Additionally, she has been awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship and has contributed to the field of legal education and scholarly interaction with judicial decision-making.
