Biography

Alexandra Dmitrieva received her PhD in Sociology from St. Petersburg State University in 2013, where her thesis analyzed Giddens's theory of structuration to explain forms of drug use in Russia. In 2017, she co-founded a Kyiv-based NGO, the Support, Research and Development Center, which has been awarded multiple grants to conduct qualitative studies on drug use, opioid agonist therapies, and prisoners' rights in Ukraine. Alexandra has held a research fellowship at the University of Edinburgh, where she plans to work on a book project that draws on six years of extensive ethnographic research in medical facilities and prisons, analyzing legal policy documents related to drug use, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis treatment in Ukraine. Her research aims to examine the development of care and punishment over a thirty-year period in the context of post-Soviet transformation. Alexandra has several selected publications including contributions to the upcoming collective book 'Judging Drugs: Critical Issues Law and Society', and articles in Social Science & Medicine and Contemporary Drug Problems.
