Biography

Professor Alexandra Flynn’s teaching and research focus on municipal law governance, administrative law, and property law. She has published numerous peer-reviewed papers, public reports, and edited books on Indigenous municipal legal relationships, housing, homelessness, and the constitutional status of cities. As the Director of the Housing Research Collaborative, she oversees CMHC SSHRC-funded projects focused on Canada’s housing crisis, including the Housing Assessment Resource Tools project, which helps communities measure and address housing needs. Her work involves academic partnerships with non-profit and community organizations to develop responsive land use practices concerning the financialization of housing. Additionally, she is engaged in projects related to precariously housed individuals in Canadian cities and the governance of personal property. Before entering academia, she practiced banking and securities law at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy in New York, and Aboriginal Law at Ratcliff & Company in Vancouver. Professor Flynn has received Legal Aid awards for her work and has served in a senior policy role at the City of Toronto focusing on intergovernmental relationships. She has a long history as a TEDx speaker and a frequent media commentator on issues related to homelessness and access to justice.
