Biography

Alexandra Garcia is a Professor at the School of Nursing and serves as the Interim Director of the St. David's Foundation Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research for Underserved Populations. She is also a courtesy professor in Population Health at the Dell Medical School and was the inaugural director from 2016 to 2020. Dr. Garcia teaches undergraduate and graduate students in research, public health, policy, and global health. Her research focuses on the social, cultural, and economic influences on health and self-management of chronic diseases, including symptom experiences related to type 2 diabetes and co-occurring chronic illnesses, particularly among Latinx adults. Additionally, she has directed faculty-led study abroad programs in Guadalajara, Mexico, and Heredia, Costa Rica, and collaborates with clinicians and nurses in Eldoret, Kenya, on educational research projects. Dr. Garcia is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and has served as the past President of the Texas Public Health Association and past Chair of the Public Health Nursing Section of the American Public Health Association.
