Biography

Alexandra Ion is an Assistant Professor at the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. She directs the Interactive Structures Lab, where she investigates and develops interactive design tools that enable digital fabrication of complex shapes and structures for novice users. Her research lies at the intersection of human-computer interaction, digital fabrication, metamaterials, and computational design. Ion's work has been published in and awarded at premier HCI venues, and she has participated in multiple exhibitions including a permanent exhibition at the Ars Electronica Center and traveling exhibitions throughout South America and Germany. Before joining CMU, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at ETH Zurich in Switzerland and earned her Ph.D. from the Hasso Plattner Institute in Germany.
