Biography

Alexandra Karamitrou is a geophysicist with a Ph.D. in geophysics and an MSc in seismology, as well as a BSc in geology. She has served as a Daphne Jackson research fellow in the Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton's Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Karamitrou's research focuses on the application of artificial intelligence to solve complex social and cultural problems, employing multiple datasets that include remotely sensed geophysical data and environmental information to detect submerged shipwrecks. She is also applying computer vision and image processing techniques, enhanced by deep learning, to automatically identify and classify human-made islets, known as Crannogs. Her research has received funding from the Royal Academy of Engineering for projects examining global decommissioning practices related to offshore structures, vessels, oil rigs, and wind turbines.
