Dr. Alexandre Roberts

Biography

Alexandre Roberts is a Byzantinist and Graeco-Arabist intellectual historian specializing in Byzantine medieval Middle Eastern scholars' engagement with ancient intellectual traditions. He is currently working on a monograph entitled 'Chemistry Consequences of Byzantium on the Islamic World,' which investigates technical treatises, typically called alchemical, in philosophical, theological, and legal sources found in Greek and Arabic manuscripts. His notable publication, 'Reason and Revelation in Byzantine Antioch,' was released by the University of California Press in 2020. Roberts has contributed to various academic works focused on Byzantine-Islamic scientific culture and the interplay between Greek and Arabic intellectual traditions. His educational background includes a Ph.D. in History from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2015, an M.A. in History from the same institution in 2011, and an A.B. in Physics from Princeton University in 2008. Roberts has held several academic positions, including Associate Professor at the University of Southern California since 2022, reflecting his expertise in Classics and History.
