Alexandre Sobolev is a trained crystallographer from Russia with an undergraduate background in physics and a specialization in chemical fields related to small molecules. He served as a Senior Research Scientist and led the activities at the Laboratory of Chemical Crystallography Structure Analysis at the L. Ya. Karpov Physico-Chemical Research Institute in Moscow for twenty years. Sobolev has significantly contributed to the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Base and the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database, examining hundreds of primary publications. In 1992, he moved to Australia to join the electron density studies research group at the University of Western Australia, where he participated in the commissioning of the 'Larsen-type' single crystal Huber four-circle X-ray diffractometer, the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, aimed at high-quality data acquisition for charge and spin density determination. Sobolev specializes in X-ray structure analysis, focusing on complex structures in collaboration with faculty members, and teaches crystallography to PhD students and advanced undergraduates. His recent research includes the structural characterization of self-assembled Host-Guest macromolecular complexes, tackling critical problems associated with the physical properties of crystals, as well as the dynamics of molecules and the presence of solvent in crystals.
