Professor Alexei Kornyshev is an expert in condensed matter theoretical chemical physics with applications in biophysics, electrochemistry, nanoscience, and energy generation and storage. His research spans various areas, including electron and proton transfer reactions, hydration processes, and transport phenomena in solid electrolytes and polymer electrolyte membranes. He also studies the aggregation and recognition of helical biopolymers and the structure of chiral liquid crystals, as well as modern fuel cell theory, particularly in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEFC), Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFC), and Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC), alongside supercapacitors. His current research interests include DNA biophysics, optofluidics, nanophotonics, molecular electronics, and ionic liquids. Kornyshev has published over 300 original articles in leading journals, authored a volume in the textbook 'How to Derive a Formula' with World Scientific, and edited five multi-author books. He received his Master’s degree from the Moscow Physical Engineering Institute in theoretical nuclear physics and defended his PhD in Physical Mathematical Sciences. His extensive career includes roles as a Research Scientist at the Frumkin Institute of Electrochemistry, leadership at the Research Centre Juelich, and an appointment at Imperial College London as Chair of the Chemical Physics Department.
