Biography

Alexey Makarin is an applied economist with research interests in political economy, the economics of digitization, and international trade. His work examines the economic consequences of the 2014 Russia-Ukraine conflict and its impact on political and individual outcomes. Before joining MIT Sloan, Alexey served as an Assistant Professor at the Einaudi Institute for Economics and Finance (EIEF) in Rome, Italy. He has been a Research Fellow at the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and has published in notable journals including the American Economic Review, Econometrica, and the Journal of Public Economics. His insights have been featured in media outlets such as The New York Times, The Guardian, NPR, and Scientific American. Alexey obtained his PhD in Economics from Northwestern University in June 2019 and holds a BA from the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, Russia.
