Biography

Alexis Black is an Assistant Professor in the School of Audiology and Speech Sciences at the University of British Columbia. She earned her PhD in Linguistics and Cognitive Science from UBC in 2018 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship under Dr. Richard Aslin at Haskins Laboratories. In her role at UBC, which she began in January 2020, Dr. Black investigates how linguistic forms and concepts emerge during early learning processes and the associated perceptual biases. Her research employs both behavioral techniques such as eye tracking and neuroimaging methods including EEG and fNIRS. Dr. Black's work reflects significant contributions to understanding communication processes in diverse contexts, especially promoting literacy in a multicultural digital world, aspects recognized by the SSHRC Partnership Grant she received.
