Biography

Alexis Granwell, an artist born in 1981 in New York, investigates the potential of pulp to create intimacy, exploring the psychological and bodily characteristics built within natural environments. Granwell's work, which includes sculptures and works on paper, has been widely exhibited both nationally and internationally. She earned her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 2007 and received her BFA (magna cum laude) in Painting with a Minor in Art History from Boston University in 2003. Granwell has participated in numerous exhibitions, including those at the American University Art Museum, Weatherspoon Museum, and various galleries in New York. She has been awarded the Independence Foundation Fine Arts Fellowship in 2015 and has attended residencies at Dieu Donné, I-Park Foundation, AS220, Ragdale, and Jentel. Her work has been reviewed by prominent publications such as Hyperallergic, Sculpture Magazine, and the Washington Post. Currently, she teaches at the University of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and between 2013 and 2018, she co-directed Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philadelphia, a collective she co-founded in 2009. Granwell lives and works in Philadelphia, PA.
