Biography

Alfonso Abizaid completed his BA, MA, and PhD in Psychology at Concordia University, where he was awarded the Governor General's Medal for his PhD work and served as valedictorian of his class in 2002. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council at Yale University School of Medicine. Professor Abizaid supervises students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. His research lab, known as the Abizaid Lab, explores the brain processes that integrate environmental information and regulate feeding and energy balance. His research focuses on the impact of metabolic hormones, particularly ghrelin, on reward-seeking behaviors and the actions of the mesolimbic reward system. There is a particular emphasis on how ghrelin may influence feeding and coping mechanisms, especially in contexts of chronic social stress and prenatal exposure to endocrine disruptors.
