Dr. Alfred O. Berg grew up in the Midwest and graduated with an M.D. from Washington University in St. Louis. After completing his residency in family medicine at the University of Missouri in Columbia, he relocated to Seattle, where he became a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar. He earned an M.P.H. from the University of Washington and completed a residency in general preventive medicine and public health in 1979. In the same year, Dr. Berg joined the faculty at the University of Washington, spending his entire academic career there until retirement in 2013. He was a prominent contributor to the development of family medicine's scholarly research agenda. Dr. Berg served 10 years on the Board of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine in various elected capacities and was an associate editor for the Journal of Family Practice for many years. Additionally, he was the medical editor for the AAFP's Home Study program for 10 years and served as an associate editor for the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine for 15 years. Dr. Berg received numerous awards, including the Marian Bishop Leadership Award from STFM and the Thomas Johnson Education Award from AAFP. He actively participated in national expert panels to guide practice policy using evidence-based methods, including serving as chair of the United States Preventive Services Task Force. In retirement, he enjoys playing piano and harpsichord with local chamber music groups, serving on nonprofit boards, reading, cooking, and traveling with his wife Janet, a retired psychiatrist.
