Dr. Alfred Bodenheimer

Biography

Alfred Bodenheimer is a Professor of Religious History and Literature of Judaism at the University of Basel. He was born in 1965 in Basel and completed his studies in German Philology and History at the University of Basel in 1991, receiving a licentiate. He earned his doctorate in Modern German Philology from the same university in 1993 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Franz Rosenzweig Institute at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem from 1995 to 1997. He served as a lecturer in Comparative Literature at Bar-Ilan University in Tel Aviv until 1997. From 1997 to 2003, he was responsible for teaching and research in Judaic Studies at the Institute for Jewish-Christian Research at the University of Lucerne. In 2002, he obtained his Habilitation in German Literary Studies from the University of Geneva. Since 2003, he has been a professor at the University of Basel, and from 2004 to 2008, he was also a professor of Hebrew and Jewish Literature at the Hochschule für Jüdische Studien Heidelberg, where he served as rector starting in 2005. He was the dean of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Basel from 2010 to 2012. Bodenheimer has held numerous scholarly functions, including president of the Society for European-Jewish Literature Studies and member of the advisory board of the Jewish Museum in Vienna. He has contributed to various editorial boards and has been involved in several publishing ventures related to Jewish studies.
