Biography

Alfred Hartemink is a Professor at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, specializing in Soil Environmental Sciences. His teaching areas include Pedology and Introduction to Soil Science. Hartemink's research focuses on digital soil morphometrics, soil mapping, and soil carbon in relation to real-world environmental problems. He has been instrumental in the development of the discipline of digital soil morphometrics, which transforms the study and sampling of soil profiles. Prior to his current role, he served as a senior researcher at ISRIC–World Soil Information in the Netherlands and coordinated the $18 million GlobalSoilMap project. He has worked extensively as a pedologist and soil fertility specialist in various countries including Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Kenya, Australia, and Papua New Guinea. From 2002 to 2014, he engaged with a large national and global network of soil scientists as the (Deputy) Secretary General of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS).
