Biography

Alfred Hermida is a Ph.D. and an award-winning online news pioneer and digital media scholar with several decades of experience in journalism education and digital journalism. He served as the director of the School of Journalism, Writing, and Media at the University of British Columbia from June 2015 to December 2020. He is the co-principal investigator of the SSHRC-funded Global Journalism Innovation Lab and co-founded Conversation Canada in 2017. His research addresses the transformation of media, emergent news practices, media innovation, and data journalism. Among his notable publications are 'Data Journalism: Regeneration News' (Routledge, 2019) co-authored with Mary Lynn Young, and 'Tell Everyone: Share Matters' (DoubleDay, 2014), which won the 2015 National Business Book Award. Before academia, Hermida worked for 16 years as a television, radio, and online journalist at the BBC, where he was the founding news editor of the BBC News website, a position through which he helped the site win a BAFTA award for four consecutive years for its innovative approach to news delivery.
