Alfred Simkin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Brown University. He is focused on developing improved algorithms and workflows for modeling genomics and host/pathogen interactions. With a PhD in molecular evolution of noncoding RNAs from the University of Massachusetts Medical School (2014) and postdoctoral experience at Cornell University, he has expertise in simulating microRNA binding sites. Prior to joining Brown University in November 2022, Simkin taught genetics at Elon University while mentoring undergraduate students in genomics. His research emphasizes the analysis of infectious diseases including malaria, Epstein Barr virus, Hepatitis, Chagas disease, Syphilis, COVID, and Lyme disease. As part of the IDEEL consortium at UNC Chapel Hill, he collaborates on projects aimed at making computational tools scalable and publicly accessible. Simkin is also dedicated to training the next generation of computational biologists.
