Biography

Alfred Yu is a Professor and Associate Vice-President (Partnerships, Entrepreneurship, Commercialization) at the University of Waterloo. He is based in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and holds cross-appointments in Pharmacy and Applied Mathematics. Yu directs the NSERC CREATE Program Next-Generation Innovations Ultrasonics (N-GENIUS) and serves as Associate Director at the Center for Bioengineering and Biotechnology. With a significant research focus on ultrasound imaging and therapeutics, he has made substantial contributions to the field. Yu began his academic career at the University of Hong Kong before moving to Waterloo in 2015. His work has earned him numerous accolades including the IEEE Carl Hellmuth Hertz Award, the ISTU Frederic Lizzi Award, and the Ontario Early Researcher Award. He is a fellow of major societies including IEEE, AIUM, CAE, EIC, and AAIA and currently serves as Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, Frequency Control. His research interests include advanced imaging algorithms, high-performance beamforming platforms, as well as cellular dynamics studies and wave-matter interactions in therapeutic ultrasound.
