Biography

Ali Abu-Alfa is a tenured Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the American University of Beirut (AUB). He serves as the Director of the Human Research Protection Program at AUB and the Research Affairs Office at AUB Medical Center. With a career spanning two decades at Yale School of Medicine, he remains an Adjunct Professor in the Section of Nephrology. From 2010 to 2023, he led the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at AUB. Dr. Abu-Alfa earned his MD from AUB in 1985 and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Northwestern University in 1990, followed by a fellowship in Nephrology at Yale in 1993. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology and is a certified hypertension specialist. As an advocate for peritoneal dialysis, he has held leadership roles in the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis and is engaged in research related to chronic kidney disease, complex hypertension, and nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. His work aims to improve care delivery in both resource-rich and resource-limited settings, focusing on innovative treatment methods for peritoneal dialysis and advancing research ethics in human subject protection.
