Ali Elham is a Professor of Design Optimisation at the University of Southampton. He received his Ph.D. in 2013 from Delft University of Technology, where his research focused on multidisciplinary design optimisation of lifting surfaces. His expertise lies in the development and application of techniques for designing next-generation transport aircraft with a goal of achieving zero emissions. Prior to joining Southampton in January 2022, he was the Director of the Institute of Aircraft Design and Lightweight Structures at TU Braunschweig in Germany. His current research includes designing novel aircraft configurations and investigating concepts such as electric, hybrid-electric, and hydrogen-powered aircraft. He studies coupled-adjoint aerostructural optimisation, multiphysics topology optimisation, and develops advanced computational methods for aerodynamic and structural analysis to support aerospace vehicle design. In addition, Ali is active in professional societies, serving as a member of the Royal Aeronautical Society's Structures Materials Specialist Committee and as Vice-President of Academic Affairs for the Society of Allied Weight Engineers. He is involved in significant research projects, including assessments of future propulsion systems and sustainable design initiatives.
