Biography

Ali Hortaçsu is the William B. Ogden Distinguished Service Professor in the Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics at the University of Chicago. His research lies at the intersection of industrial organization, econometrics, and market design. He focuses on how firms and consumers interact in complex, data-rich environments through auctions, digital platforms, and financial markets. Using large-scale transaction data and structural models alongside modern econometric and machine learning methods, he studies pricing, competition, and consumer choice to inform economic theory and public policy. His work has appeared in leading academic journals and serves as a resource for regulators and firms in evaluating market performance, the effects of mergers, regulations, and platform design. Hortaçsu has received several awards, including the Rahmi M. Koç Medal of Science in 2021, and is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences as well as a fellow of the Econometric Society. He has served as co-editor for the Journal of Political Economy and the RAND Journal of Economics, as well as for the Handbook of Industrial Organization. Additionally, he co-authored a textbook on structural econometric modeling in industrial organization and quantitative marketing. Hortaçsu obtained his Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University in 2001.
