Biography

Ali Jadbabaie is a recognized expert in fields such as network science and decision control theory, focusing on multi-agent coordination. He holds the position of JR East Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at MIT, where he also serves as the Department Head. He is the Associate Director of the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society and the Director of the Sociotechnical Systems Research Center. Previously, he was the Alfred Fitler Moore Professor in the Network Science Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, where he gained recognition for his highly-cited and influential research. Jadbabaie's work includes significant contributions to optimization-based control, multi-agent coordination, consensus methods, network science, and network economics. He has mentored numerous students and postdoctoral scholars who have gone on to academic positions in engineering and business. His academic credentials include a BS from Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, an MS from the University of New Mexico in electrical and computer engineering, and a PhD in control and dynamical systems from the California Institute of Technology. He completed his postdoctoral work at Yale University before joining the faculty at Penn in July 2002. He also holds secondary appointments in computer and information science at the Wharton School. Jadbabaie is actively involved in funded research initiatives and serves on various editorial boards, including as inaugural editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Network Science and Engineering. He has received multiple prestigious awards, including the National Science Foundation Career Award and the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award. His current research interests focus on the interplay between dynamic systems and networks, specifically in multi-agent coordination control, distributed optimization, network science, and network economics.
