Biography

Professor Ali Ünlü holds a professorship in Empirical Educational Research at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). His research areas include mathematical statistical methods, modeling, measurement, and visualization of information in quantitative behavioral sciences. He is particularly focused on empirical educational research and large-scale assessment. Professor Ünlü's primary research interests revolve around generalized latent variable models and their applications in measurement of knowledge and competence. He earned a degree in mathematics from Technical University of Darmstadt in 2000 and completed his doctorate in psychometrics and mathematical psychology at the Institute of Mathematics, University of Graz in 2004. Following his doctoral studies, he served as a visiting professor at the University of Graz and as a junior specialist at the University of California, Irvine, and Purdue University. In 2009, he acquired postdoctoral teaching qualification (habilitation) from the Department of Statistics at the University of Augsburg and subsequently became an associate professor at TU Dortmund. From December 2011 to December 2016, he held a chair funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research at the Centre for International Student Assessment (ZIB). Since 2011, he has been a full professor focused on empirical methods in education research at TUM.
