Biography

Ali Yaycioglu is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Stanford University. He specializes in the history of the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey, focusing on economic, political, and legal institutions and practices, as well as social and cultural life in southeastern Europe and the Middle East. His research interests include how people imagined, represented, and recorded property and territory, especially during early periods. Yaycioglu employs digital tools to enhance understanding and visualization of historical contexts. His book, "Partners Empire: Crisis Ottoman Order Age Revolutions" (Stanford University Press, 2016), reconsiders the Ottoman Empire within the global revolutionary context of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Currently, he is working on a book project titled "Ultimate Debt: State, Wealth, and Death in the Ottoman Empire," which examines transformations in property, finance, and statehood during the same period. He is also affiliated with Stanford's Center for Spatial and Textual Analysis, where he supervises the digital history project, Mapping Ottoman Epirus.
