Biography

Alia Parker is a transdisciplinary designer and researcher focused on the intersection of contemporary design and science, exploring ethical and relational material possibilities that emerge in more-than-human design contexts. Her critical bio-design practice employs experimental methodologies in textiles, fashion, biology, and installation, underpinned by posthuman ethics and philosophies of care and biosemiotics. Alia works with myco-remediating species and fungi to investigate themes of repair, transformation, and digestion, proposing paradigmatic shifts in co-design across biotic and abiotic systems within anthropogenic ecologies. She draws on design histories and speculative futures to create affirmative methods of engaging with ecological precarity. Alia's work has been widely exhibited, including at TEXTURE Canberra Contemporary Art Space in 2023, and has received several awards like the wearable category of the Northern Beaches Environmental Art Design Prize in 2022. Over the past ten years, she has worked as a designer, maker, and researcher in the ethical fashion and textile industries across New York, Melbourne, and Sydney.
