Dr. Alice Baumgartner

Biography

Alice Baumgartner is an associate professor of history at the University of Southern California. She specializes in 19th century North America and teaches courses focusing on this period. Baumgartner received her Ph.D. in History from Yale University and holds an M.Phil. in Latin American Studies from the University of Oxford. Her book, 'South Freedom: Runaway Slaves on the Mexico Road to the Civil War,' published in 2020, was named a New York Editors’ Choice and was a finalist for the Los Angeles Book Award. Her research has been supported by various prestigious institutions, including the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Mellon Foundation. Baumgartner has authored several scholarly works, including journal articles and book chapters that explore topics such as the U.S.-Mexico borderlands, slavery, and transnational history. She continues to contribute to the field with her active research and publications.
